Fois
Each character will follow a faith, a specific denomination of one religion which dictates how a character should live.
Fervor
Fervor is a measure of how righteous adherents believe that a faith is and ranges from 0% to 100%. Fervor determines how expensive it is for rulers to create new faiths and how likely counties and characters are to convert.
Fervor increases at a rate of +3.5 each year, modified by the virtues and sins of religious leaders, particularly the head of faith. Fervor grows more slowly for faiths followed in more than 20 counties. New faiths start at 100% fervor, while historical ones start at 50%. A faith without a head of faith will gain +50 Fervor if the head of faith title is created.
Fervor is modified by the Holy War casus belli. Attackers in holy wars lose fervor, while defenders gain fervor.
For Organized faiths, while Fervor is below 40% a heresy outbreak can happen. When a heresy outbreak takes place, 10-25 counties and at least one Modèle:Icon/d Duke who isn't a head of faith will convert to another faith within the same religion. The chance for a heresy outbreak and the number of counties and rulers that will convert increase with lower Fervor. If there is a player-created faith from the same religion nearby, that faith will always be picked. When the heresy outbreak occurs, each ruler that embraces the heresy will add 15% fervor to the religion they are defecting from.
Faith hostility
Each faith has a view of every other faith that depends on their Theism doctrines, whether they have any syncretism tenets, and whether they have any religion-specific doctrines. The Modèle:Icon/p Pluralist doctrine halves the penalties while the Modèle:Icon/f Fundamentalist doctrine doubles them. Holy wars and intermarriages will end if one of the characters converts to a faith that no longer allows them.
| View | Character opinion | Popular opinion | Intermarriage | Title usurpation | Holy wars | Advantage per Modèle:Icon/a Faith Hostility Advantage | Adoption piety cost | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Righteous | 0 | 0 | Modèle:Icon/y | Modèle:Icon/y | Modèle:Icon/n | 0 | 0 | This Faith is considered legitimate. |
| Astray | −10 | −15 | Modèle:Icon/y | Modèle:Icon/y | Modèle:Icon/n | 0 | 100 | This Faith differs in a way that is not particularly significant. |
| Hostile | −20 | −30 | Modèle:Icon/y | Modèle:Icon/n | Modèle:Icon/y | 0.5 | 150 | This Faith deviates significantly. |
| Evil | −30 | −45 | Modèle:Icon/n | Modèle:Icon/n | Modèle:Icon/y | 1 | 250 | This Faith is considered anathema. |
Faith organization
Faith organization describes how organized and coherent each faith is. Faiths can be divided into organized and unreformed, each having advantages and drawbacks. Most Pagan faiths start unreformed and all other faiths except Modèle:Icon/k Kuzarism start organized.
| Organized | Unreformed | |
|---|---|---|
| Adopt Feudal / Clan Ways decision | yes | no |
| Conversion | superior | inferior |
| Opinion with feudal, republic and clan vassals | 0 | −20 |
| Monthly prestige | 0 | +20% |
| Conversion cost to unreformed faiths | +500% | 0 |
| Conquest casus belli | no | yes |
| Pagan combat advantage | 0 | +10 |
| Faith creation | New faiths | Reformation |
| Can raid | no | yes |
Virtues and sins
Virtues and sins are traits which a religion or faith considers virtuous or sinful. Characters receive +10 Same Faith Opinion and +1 Monthly Piety for each virtue trait they have and they lose -10 Same Faith Opinion and -1 Monthly Piety for each sin trait they have.
If a trait is considered a virtue by both the faith's religion and one or more of the faith's tenets, the bonuses will stack. This however does not apply for bonuses that scale with the number of virtues or sins such as the Legalism tenet.
Head of faith
The head of faith is the formal leader of a faith. Whether a faith has a head of faith or not, as well as how the head of faith is chosen if there is one, is determined by the doctrine with the same name. Heads of faith gain
+1
Modèle:Icon/p Piety per month.
The head of faith is a title. To create it, a character requires control of a Holy Site, 300 Modèle:Icon/g Gold and at least a Devoted level of devotion. Heads of faith can be vassals even if they do not own any landed title.
Some Christian and Muslim faiths have the same head of faith but can gain a new one via decisions.
If the faith has a Modèle:Icon/s Spiritual head of faith, they will always have a Modèle:Icon/l Learning education trait and the following interactions are possible with a head of faith if the character is not at war with them. They are available even if the head of faith is outside diplomatic range.

If a faith has a Modèle:Icon/s Spiritual head of faith then rulers of the same faith can use the Request Claim interaction on each other in order to gain a Modèle:Icon/p Pressed Claim at a Modèle:Icon/p Piety cost that scales with the selected title's rank, unless one of them has Fichier:Theocracy government.png Theocracy government or a Modèle:Icon/s Strong Hook on the head of faith or both rulers have a bureaucratic government. If the faith also has the Communion tenet rulers also unlock the Request Excommunication interaction on each other in order to give the target the Modèle:Icon/e Excommunicated trait at the cost of 500 Modèle:Icon/p Piety. The head of faith's acceptance for both depends on its Modèle:Icon/o Opinion of both the proposer and the target and well as both rulers' virtue and sin traits.
Conversion
Each character can convert to a different faith at any point. To do so, click on the Faith button on the bottom left corner of the screen (between the House and Culture buttons) and select the desired Faith from the Other Faiths menu.
Conversion costs Modèle:Icon/p Piety based on the difference between the doctrines of the new faith and the doctrines of the old one. The cost can also be affected by the following:
- −1% per Learning attribute of character
- −15% if old faith has Pluralistic doctrine
- −20% if holding Stonehenge special building in Salisbury
- −25% if both old faith and new faith has Pluralistic doctrine
- −25% if converting to the faith of a concubine
- −35% if converting to an existing faith
- −50% if converting to an existing faith within the same religion
- −50% if converting to the faith of a spouse
- −50% if converting to the faith of an attacker in a Holy War
- −50% if character's dynasty has 3 legacies in the Adventure tree
- −75% if character has the Apostate lifestyle perk
- −150% if the new faith exists in the realm or a neighboring realm and same religious family
- −225% if converting to an organized faith from an unreformed faith
- −225% if converting to the faith of a concubine while old faith is unreformed
- −250% if converting to the faith of a spouse while old faith is unreformed
- −250% if converting to the faith of an attacker in a Holy War while old faith is unreformed
- −250% if the new faith exists in the realm or a neighboring realm and different religious family
- +25% if the new faith is unreformed while having clan government
- +50% if the new faith is unreformed while having feudal government
- +75% if the new faith is unreformed while having republican government
- +100% if the new faith belongs to a different religion within the same religious family
- +200% if the new faith belongs to a different religious family
- +500% if the new faith is unreformed while the old faith is organized
- +500% if the new faith's religion is dead
Regardless of modifiers, the cost to convert can never be less than 250 Modèle:Icon/p Piety.
New faiths
A ruler who is at peace can create a new faith for a religion once per lifetime by spending a very large amount of piety. The farther the new faith's tenets will be from the character's original faith, the more piety it will cost to change it. Once a new faith is created, the ruler, their close family and their realm capital will instantly convert. Vassals may convert depending on their Modèle:Icon/o opinion and difference in Modèle:Icon/l learning. New faiths inherit the holy sites of the original faith.
A ruler who is a vassal cannot create a new faith unless their primary title rank is at least Modèle:Icon/d duke.
A new faith cannot have both its tenets and doctrines entirely identical to those of an existing faith.
Modèle:Expansion Landless player characters can create a new faith at any time if they can afford the cost but cannot reform faiths and cannot be heads of faith.
Modèle:Expansion Both creating a new faith and reforming one will grant a Modèle:Icon/h Holy Legend seed.
Reformation
Faiths that are unreformed can be reformed by a ruler who controls at least 3 holy sites by spending a large amount of Modèle:Icon/p Piety. Upon reformation, the new faith will keep the name of the old faith while the old faith will be renamed.
Reforming a faith does not require changing any tenet or doctrine and AI rulers who reform their faith will never do it except possibly for those regarding the head of faith.
Modèle:Expansion Holding court will always include an event to pay a large amount of Modèle:Icon/g Gold to remove the 3 holy sites restriction for reforming the faith if the following requirements are met:
- Level of devotion is at least Fichier:Icon piety pagan 02.png Faithful
- At least three of the counties housing the faith's holy sites follow the faith
- At least one of the holy sites is in domain or belongs to a vassal with the same faith
- At least one other independent ruler follows the same faith, has a holy site in their realm, and is not Modèle:Icon/z Zealous or Modèle:Icon/r Rival
- At leans one independent ruler that is a neighbor or shares a seazone and follows a Hostile or Evil reformed faith from a different religion won a war, controls one of the unreformed faith's holy sites, or controls at least 4 counties that follow the unreformed faith
Modèle:Expansion If an independent ruler with Modèle:Icon/g Administrative government reforms their faith, the state faith will automatically be changed to the reformed faith.
Religion
Religions have three main effects. First, each religion has a baseline set of sins and virtues. Second, the religion determines what holy building can be constructed. Third, the religion determines which men-at-arms its holy orders will favor. A faith's tenets can add traits considered sins and virtues, replacing some of the original ones if they happen to conflict.
